DAS DUO
The combination of harp and piano was extremely popular around and after the end of the 18th century and inspired composers such as Boieldieu, Pleyel, Ries, Dussek, Mendelssohn Bartholdy etc. to produce a rich body of entertaining music.
The DUO has gathered the long- forgotten original scores from many libraries throughout Europe and awakened them to new life. Besides all the works for duo of the classic composers, the repertoire also includes pieces by Bazelaire, Turina, Alpher as well as contemporary works by composers such as Manfred Trojahn, Joh.H.E.Koch, Jean Fellis, Wolfgang Köhler, JO Ehrentreich, Max Stern, written on the DUO´s instigation.

DAS DUO played for many years on modern instruments only, but now, as the
ERARD DUO, it is also presenting music on original instruments of the
Erard era (1752-1855): Sébastien Erard (1752-1831) and his nephew Pierre (1786-1855) were pioneers in the construction of harps and pianos in Paris, and their inventions provided crucial impulses for modern instrument making.
The works include duo pieces by Pleyel, Dussek, Boieldieu, Naderman, Cramer
as well as solo pieces played on an Erard singleaction harp (1815) or on an Erard doubleaction harp (1837), and on a pianoforte by Longman & Broderip, London ca. 1780.
Erard´s work has been the subject of research since 1994 and is documented by the Erard Society. The first symposium was held in 1994 at the Institute for Performance Practice, with the participation of the ERARD DUO.

Additionally, all the duo works for harp and harpsichord and for harp and organ are being performed.
The DUO´s quality can be heard in a large number of concerts, radio recordings and CDs.

Brigitte Langnickel-Köhler has been playing as a soloist in chamber music recitals for many years now in all kinds of instrument combinations : with flute, horn, saxophone, choir, keyboards, ensembles.
As a harpist with a repertoire extending from the Middle Ages to the interpretation of avantgarde music, her solo performences have a particular fascination, and through her deep commitment she has stimulated contemporary composers to create important works for harp.
Another area of special importance is her
collaboration with her husband Reinhard Langnickel as a duo for harp and piano.
Besides her dedication to the interpretation of contemporary music, she is also developing a growing interest in the performance practice of old harp music on historical instruments.
As a committed teacher, she has published a harp school and various teaching literature.

Reinhard Langnickel initially studied Mathematics and Physics but went on to Piano and Historical Keyboard Instruments. Today he holds a professorship in these instruments at the Academy of Church Music in Herford.
As well as his extensive concert activities - with a repertoire ranging from the oldest music for keyboards played on original instruments, right down to contemporary piano music - Reinhard Langnickel is also a research worker in the International Erard Society, which deals with questions of instrument making and performance techniques during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
This period is also one of the focal areas of the pianist´s repertoire.
Publications on these matters appear in the Bulletin - Erard, Basel.

In 2000 came out the book "Die pianistische Revolution" from Reinhard Langnickel with a description of the development of pianoforte-playing between 1780 and 1855.
